We’re quite proud of our plywood jointing techniques, you won’t see any standard Butt Joints in our cabinets. There is no more basic wood joinery than a butt joint. A butt joint is nothing more than one piece of wood butting into another, usually at a right angle. The butt joint is an easy joint to assemble, but the problem is that it's a pretty weak joint since it's often just glued together using a small surface area. We prefer to see these joints used in wall framing on construction sites rather than in cabinet-making, as can be seen in some other plywood kitchens and furniture
We want our cabinets to last a generation, if not a lifetime. So to guarantee durability Birkwood cabinets are assembled using a combination of Dado, Rabbet, Dovetail and Mortise and Tenon jointing techniques. These joints add a considerable amount of strength and when the edges are polished and exposed they add a very pleasing aesthetic to our work.
You might ask what on earth these bits are on some of our cabinets. These are Through Mortise and Tenon Joints – a classic wood joinery method as old as the hills, used for superior strength and also because we think they’re beautiful. The ‘through’ aspect refers to the fact you can see the end of the joint, we do this to further show off the exposed edge of the plywood. If you’d prefer not to see this we can change the joint to a ‘Stopped Mortise and Tenon’ without any issue.
